Heading into the holidays
My agent asked for a promotional piece from all the artists in her group: A child offering a Christmas present. Our little friend from Africa took a few minutes away from playing with my daughter to pose for a snapshot. Most of it was painted out in the woods by lamplight on a recent camping trip. At one point I was worried the watercolors would freeze before they dried. – lec
Color added
The covers and spot illustrations are en route. Here is a sampling:
Inking
Utterson and Poole prepare to bash in Dr. Jekyll's laboratory door after hearing a disturbing "un-Jekyll-like" voice inside.
The illustrations begin in this sepia ink, to be followed by oil washes. This is one of nine in this project. – lec
And with a little color added....
Still here, inking and painting
The illustrations are developing, and I'm shifting between 19th century English novels to a contemporary adult-and-children's story. Right now I think about the illustrations so often that I feel like I'm drawing them even when I'm not actually putting pen and brush to paper. It's refreshing to be doing what I love, and challenging to be doing it on deadline. The studio's a mess, predictably. — lec
When it rains, it pours
Now that most of the fall books are out of the way, a new wave of work is brewing. The next few weeks will be spent in sketch mode on the way toward a children's book and two illustrated classics. Expect to see some of the sketches as they develop here.
